"Public Option" will be the Standard

From this article:

One such "scare tactic" the president cited Monday was an assertion that he favors socialized medicine.

Obama again denied that, although he did say he thought that a "public option" should be available as a choice for those who currently have no insurance coverage.
There is no doubt in my mind that as soon as "public option" (coverage that the government forces other people to pay for, which sounds a lot like socialized medicine to me) becomes available then many employers will dump their current coverage as a cost cutting measure. While that coverage is part of your total compensation I wouldn't expect many employers to give you a raise or increase your other benefits when they drop medical coverage.

You can count on "public option" to become the only option. When employers start dumping medical coverage then the insurance companies will start going out of business. As more insurance companies go out of business then more employers will lose the coverage they have so their employees will go on the "public option". This will start a vicious cycle that will force almost everyone into the waiting arms of the government. Soon the only private medical insurance coverage left will be so expensive that only Bill Gates will be able to afford it.

This will be like the government using your money to help Government Motors to undercut the competition and drive them out of the market and into a bailout of their own. Sooner or later your only option will be to buy from a government owned company.

If you are really unhappy with your current coverage then just imagine what it will be like when you have to deal with people like government code enforcement "agents" when your 18 month hold has an earache.

This thought just popped into my head today:

I'm a "government worker". What do you think the odds are that I'll be allowed to keep my same insurance through work after the government funded "Option" is in place? No chance.

Maybe congress will be able to keep their premium coverage, but for the gov. worker at my level - we're screwed.

That's gonna suck.
